Ok guys, I bought a 17' Searay w/3.0L Merc and Alpha 1. Has been running great but last lake trip it started stalling when engaging into gear. I could usually get it to go if I went from neutral to higher rpms quickly. Then it would run fine all the way though WOT and back. Could usually get it to go back into neutral again w/o stalling but soon as I tried to go to idle again it would die. Made trailering fun. Most likely cause? Thanks for all your help in the past!

Re: Merc 3.0L stall

sounds like it it may need a shift cable adjustment or replacement of the cable from the engine to the drive

If its linkage, would'nt it either be hard to get into gear or sound funny shifting? What is the idle RPM for that engine? Thanks

Re: Merc 3.0L stall

The reason this is cuased by the shift cable is the excess drag on the cable is activating the shift interrupter switch. This is just supposed to stumble the engine when you take it out of gear. It works off of resistance on the cable. If the cable is tight it activates and kills the engine because it does not release. You will need to replace the shift cable and also repair the source of the water that ruined it. this is ususally the shift shaft seal in the bellhousing.<br />Grant
