Merc 260 won't start

I have a 20'SeaRay with an 80's Merc 260. It's a 2 battery set up with switch. The batteries show a full 12 volt charge and all accessories operate OK. When I try to start all I get is a solenoid click. With jumper cables I can turn it over and start it. The ammeter shows small positive when running. Even after running 10 minutes when I shut down - same thing. Any recommendations? One battery is brand new, the alternator has <10 hours. Thanks for all help - vacation is running out!

Check battery and alternator first. Never assume new parts are good. Verify good connections, dont assume.

Starter's fine, the soleniod is most likely the bad item.

Can you isolate the batteries with your switch? If so, try starting with each one independently. It sounds like one of them is very weak (cell that ran dry). It will show an acceptable charge until you put a significant load on it.

Re: Merc 260 won't start

Thanks for the ideas. I removed one battery from the system. Pulled and replaced the solenoid. Cleaned all connections including block ground. no change. Can't even turn it over now with jumpers I think that eliminates the battery as the source. I Figure the starter is the problem. I will likely have to pull the engine to replace it. Any ideas to confirm before taking that step. I appreciate everyone's time.
