I am buying a '78 boat with a Merc 250cui IL6. It has been sitting for 2 years, I was going to take it apart and freshen it up: new bearings, rings, recon the head, etc.... I was just told by a reputable auto parts store that the block and head may be worthless due to salt water corrosion! Is there any truth to this? Can it be saved? I actually have 2 of these engines and was hoping to make 1 good one out of them. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's possible your mechanic is right, but the only way you're going to find out is to tear the motor down. Since it sounds like you plan to do that anyway, I'd go ahead and hope for the best, especially if you have spare parts.
Just my .02
Fred

Hi Tony,
Your blocks can be sonic tested at many machineshops, this will tell you if you have a loss of metal in any of the "important places".....
Even IF your blocks Are Junk.... Just go to the junkyard,+ find a chevy 250cid block out of a full-size car, or pick-up truck... They ARE the Same....
If you're going to run this in the Sound, you may want to find a freshwater cooling system to add to it.... Or just run it... 250cid Chevys are a dime a dozen....
Good Luck...
