Merc 25 HP won't go beyond 2.500 RPM

It is a 2 stroke 2 cyl. engine, the first time the symptom appeared it suddenly lost power as if it had run out of gas ... connected the second tank, went fine for an hour, then the problems came back and are now steady. In the water, the engine will reach 2,500 RPM, but if you push the gas beyong that it will stall; everything back fine if you stroll at low speed. Cleaned the carb, replaced the plugs (sprk fine), it monce reached full speed ... just for a few seconds, now it is back to work ... only under 2,500 RPM. Any idea?

ever check the fuel filter in the tank,may be pluging up. check for proper venting in fuel tank also check for dirty carb jets,i had an engine one time that a spider had got into the jet(who knows how or why). also check for colapsing fuel line or hose. does your primer bulb stay hard when this happens? maybe loosing prime. fuel pump even. dont expect the worse,just check the basics. dont over look the obvious.
