Re: Merc 25 HP outboard, Turn into a tiller operated motor?
It is very possible.
The blocks/carbs/bits and pieces are all the same "in the engine". On most, the manual choke and shifter are already there on the remotely controlled engines, just unusable when the cables are in place.
What you need is the complete tiller assembly and top cover from a pull start engine (or possibly some creativity to make your own starter button). On mine, the flywheel was the same, but if you need to swap these, do so also.
Study both engines before you start to dissassemble. Then take the remote controls off your engine.
The tiller handle contains the linkages to mount to the motor (mine was 2 bolts), and then just compare the throttle hook up to make the connection there. The kill switch should be obvious.
I'm sure I've horribly oversimplified the process, but with some care, it is nothing to fear. I got a scrapped engine for $100 and swapped mine out no problem, plus have a spare prop, cdi, tank, covers, etc. A good investment in my instance.
Of course, it is always nice to sell what you have and purchase what you need. Saves all kind of troubles and headaches.
Good luck whatever you decide!
