Ok guys my boat has been sitting for the past 4 years, outside. I've about got it going. However, it apears I'm having fuel pump problems.

I have pulled the (oil filter ish) fuel filter off and replaced it with a new one. I have then dumped gas into the carb and it will fire up (breifly). It wont keep runing though...

I then unscrew the filter and there is no fuel in it. I currently have the fuel line stuck in a 2.5 gal can of gas sitting next to the engine. So this leads me to beleive its not sucking gas.

So is my fuel pump shot. Crud it looks like theys cost $150. Can I somehow just fix the existing one?

Thanks for you help,
Frank

With a combination vaccum pressure guage you can check the suction and pressure side of the fuel pump.

Is there a fuel filter between the pump and the carb ? If so check and or replace it.

It's also possible that the needle in the float bowl of the carb is stuck in the seat and not allowing fuel to enter the carb.

I also have a 233 and the one I have has small glass bowl that comes from the middle of the pump. If yours is like that then no it can not be rebuilt.

Yep, it has the glass bowl on the side. I did some checking on the pump with my fingers and it doesn't seem like it is sucking or blowing on either end of the fueld pump. I've then pulled the pump off and have been looking into getting a new one.

My local Napa store can get the marine grade one for $154 and a automotive one for $128. My other parts place can get me an automotive one for $25. So whats up with that??

If I never use the boat in the ocean, should I really spend the extra money? It seems insane to do that...

Thank for your help,
frank

You must use a marine pump to avoid the risk of explosion & fire....
Under any circumstances.....
Do not use an automotive fuel pump!.....JK

I took the parts out of an automotive fuel pump a 66 buick skylark v 6 225 c.i. that i bought on e bay and rebuilt my glass bowl fuel pump a 69 buick v 6 225 c.i. for my 69 slickcraft 155 h.p. and it works great i also carry 2 fire extinguishers. how ever i did think about an electric fuel pump but that might need electronic ignition? and the pump preassure was differint.

Use the auto fuel pump. When it fails it will pump gas into your bilge. Not a problem.

SORRY ! ! BIG BOOM !! Sorry ..........

sometimes I can not help myself

Sometimes marine parts are needed, and these posts will help guide you,and hopefully help you stay safe.

A 69 Buick did not come standard with a MARINE engine in it, so why say you did all that BS. It's not going to be that way on a real marine engine on his boat that hasn't been remanned by every "wannabe marine mechanice putting a marine engine in a car" type mechanic in your area.

You may have used the internal parts of a 66 pump, but how do you know they are the same as the marine pump the original poster has? Did you physically look at them and compare them (materials included)?

It's redneck engineering and dangerous.

Re: Merc 233 Bad Fuel Pump?

tough crowd, acually it might be a 66 or 67 buick 225 c.i. i dont know what slick craft used but it is a 225 c.i. GM engine. GM did sell the tooling for the engine to jeep international, and that same motor is in the jeep cj for a very long time.
i was only 3 or 4 at the time, as for the rest of my bull **** im making up i did take the internal parts from a $24.00 66 buick skylark fuel pump and swap them out with the marine glass bowl fuel pump on my 69 slickcraft punched some holes in the diaphram for the bowl, everything matched up and rebuilt.
if i had the option to by a new pump i would have however none was available and none still are, happy don?

The bowl on my old fuel pump was there to let you know that one of the two diaphragms had failed. the bowl was attached to a metal ring that sat between the two diaphragms, when one failed it would leak into the bowl to let you know that it was time to change the pump with out stranding you.
As a side note I bought a replacement from ebasic for around 75.00

Just to make sure none of you are loosing sleep on this. I did buy the $25 pump, but it didn't have the right fittings on it... nothin I couldn't have fixed with a hacksaw and some clamps (and maybe some JB weld). However, I decided to purchase an after market marine fuel pump for $107. Is should arive today!

Thanks for all your input.
