Hi There,

Ive got a 2004 50HP ELPTO 2 stroke that has had the trim system playing up over the past few months. Essentially when in the trim range the motor will sink back down but within the tilt range the unit is fine. So after doing some research I?m assuming that its leaking internally via the pressured side of the trim up hydo curcit.

I have pulled the unit down and have inspected everything but all looks good so im going to give it a flush out and replace all the o rings.

My question is am i on the correct track? Ive been told by some mechanics over here in aus that the unit cant really be rebuilt and should only be replaced...

Also what is best to clean the units with? Metholated spirits and air gun?

Thanks
Scotty

it is usually the spring in the trim bypass valve that causes this problem. it is a design defect.

Ok thanks RRitt - i did read that in the 50's the spring becomes relaxed. Ill add the assembly to my parts order as i cant buy the spring by its self.

am i ok to clean the unit out with metho?

thanks
Scotty

if you are doing a full breakdown then you can use almost anything. I use the super heavy duty yellow degreaser (water based) from harbor freight followed by a bath in mineral spirits. If you are going to do a partial breakdown then mineral spirits. Water, alchohol, or lacquer thinner should not be used unless you are replacing every single oring in the entire system.

Ok cool thanks RRitt - its a full oring kit so all of them by the looks of it. The parts just turned up so ill go give the ram a good degrease and then wash it with some metho and let it dry up then ill start the rebuild.

Thanks for your advice RRitt you are most helpful! Id shout you a few beers if you were over this part of the world :)

Well quick update - ive finished the rebuild and refitted the unit to the motor....bloody thing is doing the same thing.. i spoke to the shop i got the oring kit from..seems ive got a 5 week wait on the trim bypass assy. don't suppose there is a reference somewhere to what the spring rate is? maybe i can get one made up.

Try flipping the actuator piston so that the needle tip is facing wrong way. That should get you back on water while you wait for parts.

Thanks again RRitt, i was thinking about putting a spacer at the top of the spring to put a bit more pressure on it but yeah i flipped the piston like you said and it seems to be working and holding my weight (85Kg) on the leg now which it wouldn't before.

Parts on order so ill change it when it arrives - 200$ all for a spring...:( ah well.

top effort with your advice matey!! :)

yeah. a lot of $$ for a spring that will just wear out again. it's a design flaw.
