Merc 200 V6 Oil Alert

I have a 200 Merc V6 and the Oil alert warning is on all the time while engine is running. That is, until I disconencted the green wire from the switch box.
I checked and the pump is pumping oil fine and level in engine tank good.

I also own a manual! The first troubleshooting possible cause is a "defective ignition system (incorrect voltage being sent to warning module.) The "Corrective Action" states to "check for the correct voltage with a DVA."

Might be a dumb question...but what is the correct voltage? I checked all three on the outside switch box and they ranged from less than one volt to 5-6 volts. Boat runs fine.

You need a special voltmeter or an adapter to measure DVA. If you have good spark, you have good DVA. You can put that green lead on any of the three leads to the coils (all six if you want to dig down to the other switchbox). Make sure your oil tank on the motor is absolutely full with no air in the neck. Crack the cap til oil comes out while the motor is running. That'll burp out the air. The alarm will start sounding as soon as the oil level drops out of the neck.

Re: Merc 200 V6 Oil Alert

From what I have read the warning module is connected to the following:
Low oil sensor in the oil reservoir.
Motion sensor of the oil pump.
The heat sensor on the power head.
To the switch in the remote control box.
and to the 12 volt supply.

The warning horn should sound on startup and go off when the pump and power head are active.

I know that the switch voltage is critical to the running of the engine correctly. You should check to see if you have a full 12 volt at the switch.

All three signals need to be coming in to the module correctly or you will get an alarm.

I don't no if the sensors are normally open or closed or if they are using a resistive value?

The oil pump has a magnetic sensor used to detect the pump rotation, some early models had a defective magnetic trigger in the pump drive coupler, check to see that the magnet is secure in the coupler.

The module uses the green wire from the ignition to compare ignition pulses to the oil pump pulses/rev counter. If they do not match the alarm goes off.

A problem in either system or a defective warning module and the alarm stays on.

Ensure ALL wiring is correct, no 'pinched' wires, etc. Verify readings, electrical 'pulses'.

Thanks guys. Will check it out. Seems I am confused as to what a DVA is... I assumed it was a multimeter. Thanks again...sneaking suspicion it simply is the engine oil tank with air in

Re: Merc 200 V6 Oil Alert

There is a low oil level warning module, at the rear right of the top of the engine held down by three bolts, it looks like a black plastic object about the size of a cigarette packet. There are two of them sandwiched together. One of them does low oil the other controls the low speed running functions. 9 times out of ten if you are not low on oil and the alarm is sounding it is that module that has gone faulty. Mine just went and this info came from a highly trained Mercury mechanic here in Bermuda. Some bright spark of a previous owner had disconnected it, I guess because the alarm was annoying them! They are about $500 here. So I will be looking to source one from the USA. Like from here but they are out of stock.

I just disconnected mine this past weekend. It seems like the sensors are not a strong part on these motors.
