My 8 HP Merc 2 stroke had a couple of strange issues
The carb mixture screw is supposed to be set at factory specs of 1 1/2 turns and then adjust from there. My motor would run best at 1/2 turn and anything else was way too rich for it. Every time I put the engine cover on it would start to run rich and stall out.
I did pull the carb 3 times to clean, rebuild and reset. I received so many possible solutions from so many people including float adjustments and coil issues.
I finally called Mercury Tech support and within 5 mins found the problem.
I had my motor in a test tank and the water was too high causing it to cover the exhaust hole in the midsection. As soon as I lowered the water level both problems went away and everything is now perfect. I have never had this happen before and it will never happen again
