Hi, here's the story. I have a Mercury 1968 125hp inline six that I was hoping to put power trim on, and what I found is a 1972 140hp inline six Merc that needs a lower unit. It has trim on it already so.....

question is will my lower unit from the 125 work on the 140?

Yes, providing both motors are the same shaft length (i.e., shortshaft or longshaft). Your 125 lower unit will bolt right up to the 140.

You should notice quite a difference in top end with that 140, they're a screamin' motor!

p.s. don't forget to renew the impeller while the lower unit's off!!!

Cheers.........ed

Just picked her up this morning, the 140 looks like it's in better shape than my 125. I'm not positive yet but I'll probably be keeping her and selling my 125 (minus the outdirive) thanks for the help.

Check the www.craigslist.org in your area, you may be able to find a dead 4-cyl or Inline Six Merc for cheap with a good lower unit. You'd get a lot more for your 1250 with a good lower unit on it!

Any of the 66 C.I. 65-HP-and-up 4-cyl's and any Inline Six from '66-up will have a lower unit that'll bolt up to your 1250.

Congrats on the good 140HP purchase, I think you're gonna like it.
Just hold on tight on that first run!..........ed

You aint gonna believe the difference!
And yep, look for a lower before ya sell the 125..(or part it out Ebay for the good parts, double the bucks)
Me?, I'd find a lower, pickle the motor, and shove it in a corner..
