HI,
Got my 18 back together from a bearing job.
Started it in a barrel and the woodruff key in the crank sheared off. I figured it was stress cracked from the previous bad bearing experience.
I replaced it with a key I bought at a local hardware store. Pow! That one went as well.
Any idea why I keep breaking keys? Should I use a real Mercury part; perhaps heat treat is different.
The engine starts fine. I think when it sneezes it breaks the key.
Should backfire be able to break a key?
Thanks,
J
