I am bringing back an 18 hp Merc, 5995557. It's had a hard life but still runs like a beast. I've been through the power head and am now doing the lower unit. The unit needs new seals, (2) upper and (1) lower. The old upper seals gave me a much harder time than expected. I got them out by destroying them and in the process, lost the needles from the bearing below, into the transmission. I didn't realize the bearing was made that way. I will be taking the unit apart now, to clear the bearing needles. **sigh** Now I have a couple issues.
1 Can anyone recommend a good tool to pull seals and now a bearing? I'm afraid of breaking the casting. Is there a narrow-ended slide hammer out there?
2 How do I remove the propeller shaft bearing carrier assembly from the housing? I see embossing indicating turn it counterclockwise for on (tighten it ?) and clockwise for off (remove it ?).
Thank you,
J
