WORKING ON THIS THING IS GETTING FRUSTRATING:)
I FOUND A CIRCUIT BREAKER WITH A RED RESET BUTTON ON THE STARBOARD SIDE NEAR THE REAR OF THE MOTOR. THERE IS TWO WIRES GOING AWAY FROM IT AND THROUGH THE TRANSOM. THOSE TWO WIRES ARE COMPLETELY DESINAGRATED. THERE IS 2 RED WIRES COMING OFF IT AS WELL. LOOK LIKE HOT CABLES FROM POSSIBLY BATTERY. THE 2 GOING THROUGH THE TRANSOM HAVE A MATCHED PAIR COMING BACK AND OVER TO THE TRIM UNIT ON PORT SIDE. SINCE THESE WIRES AREN'T CONNECTED NOW TO ANYTHING SHOULD I WORRY. I CAN E MAIL A PICTURE IF THAT COULD HELP THANKS

Sounds like all tilt/trim wiring. If they are not being used I would remove or cover them to prevent shorts and fires.

YEP YOU WERE RIGHT, THEY WERE TRIM/TILT WIRES. THE UNIT NOW WON'T LOWER BECAUSE THE WIRES GOING THROUGH THE TRANSOM ARE DISINAGRATED. ARE THESE WIRES EASY TO REPLACE. APPARENTLY THEY GO TO THE TRIM LIMIT SWITCH SOMEWHERE ON THE LOWER UNIT. ANY HELP??? :)

Re: MERC 170 CIRCUIT BREAKER ???

The wires going through the transon are for the trim gauge sender and the trim limit switch. If the trim won't operate it may be because the trim limit circuit isn't closing. Try jumping across these wires and see if that helps. To fix this problem you need to replace the trim sender and limit switch. It is a real pain to rout the wire through the transom since you need to disassemble half of the transom assembly to get at the place the wires go through.

Good luck.

Re: MERC 170 CIRCUIT BREAKER ???

YUCH! I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN. I FOUND THE TRIM LIMIT SWITCHES ON THE LOWER UNIT AND REMOVED THEM. NEITHER ON HAD ANY WIRES GOING TO THEM. THOUGH YOU COULD SEE WHERE THE WIRE BROKE OFF FROM ONE, THE STARBOARD SIDE. I TOOK THEM APART AND SAW HOW THEY WERE WIRED. THERE IS A SMALL ALLEN SCREW HOLDING THE WIRE IN THE TRIM LIMIT SWITCH. IF I REPLACE THIS WIRE AND FIND SOME WAY TO "FISH" THE WIRE BACK THROUGH THE TRANSOM, DOES POLARITY MATTER. ANOTHER WORDS, DOES IT MATTER WHICH WIRE I CONNECT, STARBOARD OR PORT. I IMAGINE THE 2 WIRES GOING OUT TO THE SWITCHES, 1 WILL GO TO T/PORT SWITCH AND 1 WILL GO TO T/STARBOARD SWITCH AND THE OTHER 2 WILL RETURN TO THE TRIM PUMP INSIDE THE BOAT?? THANKS AGAIN
