Hey all, thanks in advance for your help.

Engine: Merc 165 4 cyl in a 1987 Larson

The problem I'm having is this; The boat starts up beautiful and idles fine. Will run fine up to about 1500rpm. But as I throttle it slowly it will get around that 1500 and backfire and stall usually unless i back off quick enough. Also, when I throttle it fast (floor it for lack of a better term), it will go above 1500 rpm but feels as if it is being held back. If I throttle it in "neutral" it revs as it should. Beginning of the year it wouldn't start, so I performed tune up and found the starter to be going so I replaced that. Wondering if maybe timing is off or what other avenues I can go down when I go up to work on it this weekend. Thanks again for your help.

Could be timing or a lean fuel mixture.... Time to break out the service manual and check all the specs ;)

rickryder++ also mine did that when the head gasket was bad, do a compression check.
