My neighbor just took his boat out yesterday. First time this year. I had just helped him check and set his timing to 6 deg BTDC.

Would this be caused by carbon build up and if so, would it be corrected by using sea foam?

Carbon can do it as well as old fuel. Their is a service bullitin out that tells you to run it at idle for a few min. to let her cool down before shutting it off to prevent run on or dieseling. Have him put some Berrymans B12 from Wal Mart or autoparts store or Seafoam. This should clean up the carbon if their is any. This engine requires a minimum octane of 88 (average octane rating).

Thanks for the replies. I spoke to my neighbor and he reports having just filled up with 92 octane gas, so it's not a gas problem. I'll suggest he use the seafoam and to run it at an idle abit before shutting it off.

what year? high idle, incorrect plugs can also cause this.

The boat is an 88 I believe. It is fairly low hours and so clean as you would think it new. I'm not sure what the plugs are but idle is about 7-800 rpm. It doesn't seem real comfortable much below that.
