I just bought a boat with 1978 mercruiser 140 3.0L Alpha1 and I am still a beginner in these stuff. What is the difference between "normal" trimming out and trimming out for trailering? I have to push to different buttons for these operations.

Re: Merc 140 3.0L trim question

congrats on your new boat and welcome to iboats.

trailer function is for trailering. it raises the drive as far as it can go up. use this when function when trailering.
the trim function is for trimming your boat to it's best operation. it may move the drive maybe 15 or 20* only. from full down(in) to raised 20* (my degree angles may be fictitious, i don't know what degree full out is). usually you start from full trim in. after your on plane, you can raise the drive to achieve the best rpm for whatever speed your at. you may use this function while underway at any speed. you may use it to adj. trim for various wave conditions too. basically, to set trim while underway get up to the speed ya wanna cruise at and then trim up till reaching the highest rpm w/o adj. the throttle. you'll feel the boat feel lighter at proper trim usually. steering will become easier.

the reason ya don't want to go into trailer function while underway is that the u joints in the drive will be stressed by bringing the drive up to high (out).

here's a good link i found.. don't sink your boat... :D.... i don't think you can do that with a real boat though.. http://www.motorboatmuseum.org.uk/learning/trimming.html
