It has been fairly common practice to use the balancer puller, the air impact wrench and if it does not pop loose, a sharp tap on the end of the puller bolt while the puller is under tension.
On all of the motors that I have worked on, and there has been a few, I have not experienced any damage issues.
thanks for input guys!!! i did order the correct tool and will get on it as soon as it comes in. now is there a correct procedure for re installing? or just run it back down with the nut? thanks ken
One spline is blanked out, making a key, so it only goes on one way. Watch your finger tips, the magnets are pretty strong. There is a torque spec for the nut. (here we go again on a flywheel holding tool)
For a holding tool, a strap wrench is just fine.
hope it helps
John
thanks!! very helpful, would you know what the torque spec would be? thanks ken
You didn't state what year the motor is. My factory manual for 1976 models shows that the 5/8-18 flywheel nut for 85 to 175 hp motors is to be tightened to 100 foot pounds.
