The harmonic ballancer puller is not the right tool, and an impact wrench can be pretty hard on hardened ball and needle bearings.

Use the right puller, and hand tools. Do not hit the puller with a hammer. Lube up the puller threads and apply torque till the flywheel pops loose.

hope it helps

It has been fairly common practice to use the balancer puller, the air impact wrench and if it does not pop loose, a sharp tap on the end of the puller bolt while the puller is under tension.
On all of the motors that I have worked on, and there has been a few, I have not experienced any damage issues.

You beat on your motor any way you like. I'll do mine by the book.

Do it the right way...get the correct tool...Are you pulling a harmonic balancer, or are you pulling a flywheel? BTW, the correct tool also comes with an insert that protects the end of the crank when the "draw" bolt is tightened against the end of the crank...go ahead and use that balancer puller...when it gets tight and you hit the end of it with a hammer...i hope it doesn't mess up the end of your crank...Think about it..

Re: merc 125 flywheel removal tool

The puller I use has the necessary end swivels the tapered one engages in the grinding machine center recess. Nothing magical about it. Where necessary I have had to manufacture my tools to do certain jobs, for example a puller to remove the old type flywheels with no bolt patterns that need a puller that engages the outside of the flywheel.
I speak from some experience.
When you get a flywheel that refuses to budge refer back to my post.
Whatever works.

One spline is blanked out, making a key, so it only goes on one way. Watch your finger tips, the magnets are pretty strong. There is a torque spec for the nut. (here we go again on a flywheel holding tool)

For a holding tool, a strap wrench is just fine.

hope it helps

You didn't state what year the motor is. My factory manual for 1976 models shows that the 5/8-18 flywheel nut for 85 to 175 hp motors is to be tightened to 100 foot pounds.
