Ok started up my Merc 120 and saw no water coming out  investigated and when pulled lower unit off and checked water pump that the impeller was in pieces (nice!!) So anyway have the new kit and put it together. Just one thing... The rubber impeller seems really tight inside the pump housing, very hard to turn shaft by hand... Is this normal , should I worry about this? thought of trimming a little of the edges of the impeller but thought hmmm might not be a good idea!

Thanks for any info?

Re: Merc 120 Water Pump Issue

i'd say that was normal on my model 1 drive(i don't know yer drive though). don't trim it. i may be wrong but i think the impeller pump housing is eccentric so the impeller blades flex from compressed to extended...don't forget that quad ring when ya reassemble it in fwd. also ya might try to flush the pieces of the impeller out of the engine part. the real mechs here on iboats have said that ya need to disassemble the drive to go get all the pieces out(good advise i din't follow). i didn't want to do that so flushed back and forth and got many pieces of impeller out of the hoses and drive. i took off the tstat too and found a piece of impeller blade there also.
on another thought. if yer engine overheated, ya might want to see that yer flappers are still there and have not melted and traveled down yer exhust pipe.....after my overheat, i had nothing but the bar that supported the flappers left. it was lodged in the exhust pipe. i must have been lucky and the flappers themselves went out the exhust.
one last thought. do use proper torque on the impeller houseing. on my model 1 there are 3 different very low torque values that need to be applied for the houseing to be on the drive proper.....
