Hi. I'm new to these forums and have been reading a lot about the problems with the electrical on these motors. I saw a post by Jeff saying that putting in a relay switch can prevent a bad rectifier from frying the whole ignition system. Does this prevent the whole problem all together? Or does the problem still exist and doing a relay switch just makes the problem much smaller and cheaper to fix? I recently purchased a sugar sand Mirage with the 120 in it. So far its been fantastic and runs great (aside from the well known lack of power). I'm trying to prevent future problems and would like to put in one of these relay switches. If someone could give me a detailed description on how to do this it would be much appreciated!

look at the stator,if its red your ok mostly. its still a merc setup.
if its black go ahead and change it with a red stator kit as failure will occur.
typically its NOT the regulator that fails but the low speed charge winding in theblack stator or loose/corroded battery cables with the red stator.
on the power issue, test spark, test compresion.
if good carefuly clean carbs, inspect reeds, overspeed chips them, and rebuild the fuel pump.
also check impellor clearence and to the drive stator maint.

I had spoken with Jeff W a few weeks ago and he mentioned it to me that he did figure out how to shut the feedback to the switchbox off . you had to throw the relay before shutting the engine down . I will call him again next week and get some details as to how to wire it in.
