I Have A 85 115hp Merc, The Trouble Is When I Hit The Chock To Start All My Gauges Die The Nothing Happens, But When I Just Go For A Start The Starter Clicks And The Will Crank For A Short Time Then Start To Click Again. It Is A New Battery ( Less Then 6 Mos Old), Cleaned All Connections For Starter. Just Not Sure Which Way To Go. Thanks For The Help.

Re: Merc 115hp Hard To Start

Your battery is dead, and you may or may not also have something wrong with your choke circuit. The symptoms you describe are either a battery at 95% or better discharge, or loose connections.

If a battery doesn't charge when the engine is running, something is wrong with the charging circuit, which is a stator coil and one or two regulators or a rectifier.

hope it helps

Check the battery fluid levels.
Lead Acid batteries also hate being fully discharged. If you've run the batter below 10.2V twice or more, it's dead. Apparently you can save it, I've never been able to though. The do some hectic rate charge on it apparently to salvage it. But bottom line, 2 discharges below 10.2V and it's a gonner.

Thanks for the input I plan to change out the battery before I go back out, got to love life time replacement. Before all this happened had replaced the tramson and had the motor off, the battery was low but still started, I was reading, the problem was a battery cable but not sure how to check with out replacement? any one know of a way?
thanks again.

Re: Merc 115hp Hard To Start

when you get your new battery installed, check if something is drawing power from it when everything is switched off.
easiest will be a clamp type amp meter, but a normal avo should also be able to give you an inline reading. Remember that an amp meter get connected into the line, not over it like a volt meter.
