Haven't experienced the Optimax except on a demo ride, but have an EFI 4 stroke (Suzi DF70) and I still can't get over the smoothness, quiet, no-smoke, fuel sipping, automotive-like behavior of this engine. The Merc 115 EFI powerhead is made by Yamaha and I would expect it to be every bit as impressive. The Suzi 115 EFI is also worth a look.

If you're going to spend upwards of 22 big ones you need demos. I think you will want EFI 4 strokes on your big Whaler.

Have fun shopping.
JB

Re: Merc. 115hp 4-stroke - VS - Merc. 135 Optimax

I just took a test drive in a 1997 Conquest 23 with dual 135hp Optimax engines. While we loved the boat, I just couldn't get past the noise that the engines were making (and the burnt oil smell as well). For everyone who has experienced the 4 strokes, how much quieter are they? I know they are much quieter at idle, but I haven't heard anything about the noise levels at typical cruising RPMs. While we are on the subject of Boston Whaler's, does anyone have an opinion as to how this boat would perform with one of the new 225 hp four strokes due next spring? Thanks.

Ahoy, Shepard. The EFI 4 strokes that I have been out with sound like an automobile. Almost undetectable at idle, sweet hummm during acceleration and at cruise. NO smell, NO smoke, and no oil on the water. I have no problem with normal conversation at WOT.

I have no knowledge of the new, big EFI four strokes coming on, but I would expect any Whaler to perform well with 50 to 75% of rated power, and like a a scalded cat at rated power.

Red sky....
JB

Just wanted to let you know Yamaha now makes 225hp 4 STROKES.....Looks like they are impressive for performance and quiet.

I just received a magazine with a test and they were impressed.
I was amazed they make such a big motor.
