My merc 115 will only turn over ever so briefly when turning the ignition key. The starter almost immediately jumps out, though not always. This is particularly noticeable when while still in neutral I have the throttle forward as is the normal starting drill for this motor. I had it running fine before I removed the lower gear unit to change the water pump. I have plenty of battery and it seems that it would start fine if I could just get it to turn over long enough. Any ideas? I'm going nuts. I pulled the plugs and they are pristine.

I have a merc 115hp (1973). It is starting to do the same thing. I was told that the starter would need to be rebuilt to fix the problem.

You have one of two problems. The starter needs repair, or there is a voltage supply problem. Do the following voltage test while cranking. If the voltage reads greater than 9.5 volts, and it don't start properly, the starter is in need of attention. If it reads less than 9 volts, there is a supply problem (battery, cables, connections)

*you must do this test if you want to be sure. Everything else is just guessing.....
