merc 115--fuel or ignition?

I have a 115 I6 1984 and it does not have any power above idle. It ran fine last season--winterized and all. Got it out this year and no power. Starts and idle just fine. Appears to have spark all cylinders at idle and fuel is getting to pump and appears to carbs. I did have a rectifier that had a burned/melted connection (wire was loose). Could this have caused other electrical problems leading to no power, or should I keep looking at the fuel/carbs?? Any and all help would be appreciated--cars I know, boats I'm new to!

Hi, Jeep.

Verfy which cylinder(s) not making power by disabling each spark plug. while running.

You said it appears to have spark. Have you actually observed spark at each plug?

Examine your plugs for excess carbon, dryness, or even clean as a hound's tooth (steam cleaned).

If you have sttrong spark to each cylinder, try spraying some fuel mix into the carb feeding your dead cylinders.

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: merc 115--fuel or ignition?

Thanks for the help. I did a check of the rectifier--it tested bad so I replaced it. The coils all tested ok in the ohms test along with the trigger coil. The stator--if I checked the right wires--tested good with the wires to the upper switchbox (ohms), but I got an "open" when I checked the lower switchbox wires resistance. All other resistance tests on the stator were fine. Does this mean the stator is bad? :( I do have spark at every plug during idle. Any suggestions?

Re: merc 115--fuel or ignition?

I have an 81, 115hp, inline 6. It would idle fine, rev-up with no load ok. but in the water with a load I could barely get 2000 rpm, with a lot of missing. I removed the idle stabilizer ( black box in front of the carbs. with a red, white/black and black wires coming from it) It now runs like a bat out of hello. It does start a little harder. I may replace it if I can find a new one at a good cost.
Try disconnecting both the red and white/ black wires. ( not just one ) And see if it runs better.
MRM

Thanks Captain mrm, I'll try that right away--that's gotta be cheaper than replacing the stator and it being ok.

Merc removed the idle stabilizer a long time ago. They fried powerpacks. If you got one, take it off, it doesnt do anything anyway.

Re: merc 115--fuel or ignition?

Thanks for the help everyone :) It turns out the charge coil was shorted out by a bad rectifier, which shorted out the high speed coil in the stator. New stator is on the way. Is it okay then to leave the idle stabalizer off? I'd rather not burn out any more electronic stuff!

Thanks to all!
