Was just given a Merc 110 sn 1781799 missing
lower unit but has good compression and looks to be pretty much intact otherwise.I know its a mid '60s model but dont know which year.Is this motor worth finding and buying a lower unit or am I walking into a money pit?

Re: Merc 110

Anything that is related to a boat will be a money pit. It is just the way it goes. It is an old Merc and with that can come some costs. If it was free and tests out well on the compression side that is a plus. It might be worth throwing a few bucks into it, set a limit and see where that puts you. They are regarded in general as a very solid outboard and I see many of these old Mercs (my 78 included) still zooming around on the water.

Good Luck!!

I have a '76 Merc 110 that I have to replace the lower unit on. Mechanic tells me clutch is toast. I'm not a total klutz with tools but am not a mechanic either. How tricky is a lower unit replacement?

It's 1965.

I'd suggest you track one down that is cheap (free) because everything is bad except the lower unit.

Otherwise you could end up paying a lot, still running a 37 years old motor.

New ones in this hp-range are not that dear and does give a lotta modern features ontop of it.

Frank,Not sure what you mean by clutch, what are symptoms. Usually if shift dog is gone it is a basic replacement of the dog not whole lower unit you may need second opinion.Props some times have a rubber hub that can slip and fail causing motor to rev with no speed increase.
