I recently purchased a sailboat that came with a Kiekhafer Mercury 110 - 9.8hp with lightning ignition.

The serial number plate is missing, but I've found the following numbers when I took off the cowling:

837-2756
13995808
941-2624

There is also a number that starts with HF stamped into the swivel bracket.

I'm trying to find the exact year (with help I've narrowed it down to 67 -73).

I'm also trying to find a flush kit for it (the intake is on the underside of the cavitation plate (?), not on the sides of the engine. Tempo part number 380070 is supposed to be the correct part, but since they went out of business, I can't seem to find anyone that has it in stock.

I've heard that Mercury makes a flush kit for this, #12612T2, but that you have to take off the propeller every time you want to flush the motor.

Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated.

My 9.8 is a 1967 and has a screw next to the hole that water sprays out and it is marked 'flush". I guess you could make a fitting that screws in there to hook to your hose. My manual says not to run the engine while flushing with this hole.

What does the cowl look like? That might help a little.

As for the flush: if it is indeed in that year range, it probably has a flush port, a screw with "flush" marked near it, usually on the underside of the cowling (on mine on the starboard side), or very high up on the leg. This will circulate water throughout the water system for flushing, but you aren't supposed to run the engine using it. It will not adequately flood the water pump and you will damage your impeller.

The cooling system probably has a sort of T in that area. The water tube comes up from the water pump to the underside of the engine block and T's with one branch of the T going to the engine circulation, the other arm of the T going to the flush port.

Again, assuming your in the right ball park for the year, the water pickup for the water pump is on the underside of the anti-ventilation plate (aka 'cavitation plate') right above the propeller. Conventional 'ear muff' type flushing attachments don't work, and indeed if there were a flushing attachment to use for that pick up, it wouldn't surprise me if the propeller needed to be removed.

I have tried to figure out a way to use use a hose and that pick up, but gave up run it in a tub, barrel, or garbage can. because...

If you want to run it for adjusting the low speed mixture, etc., you need the prop on it and enough water to idle it in gear with the prop on of course. The flush-port won't do because you can't run the engine with it. The adapter for the water pump pick up won't work because the prop. will not be there.

If all you want to do is flush salt water out, the flush port will work fine.

a lot of times, but not always if the serial number plate is missing it is stolen. Lots of stolen motors out there.
