Re: Merc 100hp engages but will not throttle speed
BEEZ: As I hear it, when you move the throttle lever, you see no motion in the throttle at the motor. Suggest you take throttle control connector off at motor. Move the throttle lever: Does the disconnected throttle actuator move now? If not, either the cable is broken or the clamping screw in the rack gear inside the throttle quadrant has let go of the cable. Also check the cable clamp screw at the motor end.
If the throttle actuator does move after being disconnected, then check the linkage on the motor for freedom. You should be able to easily move the linkage from idle to WOT watching the distributor and the carb butterflys. If not, the throttle pickup links between the distributor head and the top carb may have gone together wrong when you put the carbs back on-- that's easy to do!! To fix this you'd need to get at least the top carb back off(or drop the distributor head) and get the actuator blade on the distributor head BETWEEN the two blades on the top carb. Not easy procedures!
Also, be sure shift linkage lockouts in the lower cowl aren't locking the throttle linkage at idle even though the motor is in gear.
Just a word of caution in all this. Don't move the shift linkage any more than you have to with the motor not running. The steel shift rod goes through an aluminum, screwed in bushing in the lower unit. It's only lubricated by splashing lower unit gear oil. So with about two dozen FWD/REV cycles-motor not running- the shaft will seize in the bushing.
Lots of work, but, worth it!!
