Merc 1000 flooding?

Hello, I have an old mercury 1000, 100 hp 6 cyl. inline motor. It starts good, idles fine but loses power at top end and I can smell gas fumes coming from the engine,like it's flooding,while at top speed. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.<br />jefflos

You have either a inlet needle bad or a float at the wrong level. Clean the carbs and replace the needles
