I have a 1993 150hp merc that doesn't seem to be charging the battery. I checked the voltage regulator and the connecting wires were black and some of the insulation on the wires was melted and also the regulator its self had been very hot. I put a 2 new regulators on. My question is what made them melt in the first place and would it be safe to start the engine without checking out other areas of the ignition? Thanks, liketofish

Re: melted voltage regulator

I have the same problem. Yellow wires are melted at the bullet connectors. You can test your voltage regulator with a multimeter. I'm not really sure what the cause of the problem is, just went ahead and purchased a new CDI voltage regulator. Perhaps a short in the circuitry? If anyone knows would be greatly appreciated.

Follow the attached procedure to test the regulator

Re: melted voltage regulator

Thanks, Still alittle afraid that I might damage the new regulators. Did your tac act up with the old regulators ? My tac would work part of the time. Did the new regulator work ? Thanks

Re: melted voltage regulator

Those VRs just go bad. Look thru the potting and see if you see burn marks on the circuit boards. CDI makes a replacement.

Re: melted voltage regulator

My regulator is bad as well....that is what the shop told me anyway. I received the part, but I can't even locate the regulator.

Any help on location and/install would be much appreciated.
