motor came with the boat i just bought, it had been sitting for several years. i fired it up yesterday after getting a new battery.

Wondering what these glue-like things are, they feel like hardened glue. The trail comes from the flywheel. i've heard of stator melting, is this what it would look like? do i need to pull flywheel to verify?

First off, let me say that the 1973 motors were notorious for leaking charge coils. That said, I can't tell whether it is the present coils leaking or previous ones that have been replaced. Pull the flywheel for verification.

Go to an auto parts store and buy a kit for removing steering wheels and harmonic balancers. Use it for removing the flywheel.

I've ran them for years leaking like that. If it's working don't worry about it.
