Re: mechanical fuel pump

do NOT use an auto pump! If it fails it will dump gas in the bilge!
The marine pumps have a small hose that if it fails it dumps the gas down the carb.

Your local Napa can match it up with the correct MARINE pump...

Re: mechanical fuel pump

DO NOT PLUG IT,that is a diaphram vent that usually has a small hose that runs up to the carb. It`s purpose is to tell you the diaphram has ruptured and is taking that fuel and dumping it into the carb instead of the bilge.

Re: mechanical fuel pump

If it does not have it then someone put an auto pump on it!
There should be a plastic line that runs from the pump to the back of the carb.
Could be an auto carb on the boat too...geeze!

Post some pics of the carb and fuel pump.

Re: mechanical fuel pump

That's one of the hazards of owning an older boat. Who knows what modifications were performed or what was done to "get by for the moment"! The leak detection hose most likely is connected at the spark arrestor and not on the body of the carbureator.

Here's a link to a list of Coast Guard Regulations and Federal laws that discuss boating safety: http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/federal_regulations.aspx

Here's another Coast Guard publication that's a little easier to read. It has some plain language about marine fuel and electrical systems: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/education_safety/safety/boatwater/backyardboatbuilders.pdf

These should let you know what to look for to see if you're meeting the safety standards.

Re: mechanical fuel pump

They used Carter and AC fuel pumps in those years if i remember.

The fitting on the carb should look like the fitting on this one,
Top left corner of picture with the arrow...brass barbed fitting....

Re: mechanical fuel pump

The arrow shows where a glass sight bowl should have been. This is a older version of a dual-diaphram pump. The sight glass was changed to a clear hose that went to the carb on later fuel pumps.

Re: mechanical fuel pump

Ask the carb rebuilder. If that fitting is not there it should have a plug in the hole where it should go.
Take the plug out and the fitting should be a pressed in fit.
Get that straight and get some clear pvc line for it.

The clear line is so you can see if the pump ever fails.

Was there a spacer between the carb and intake? The fitting could be on it.
