I know this sounds crazy,...so there I was, I went out jug fishing with my 2 sons last night. I had some cut blue gill on some of my jugs. I was stripping the bait off my hooks to get ready to head back. I pulled a blue gill head off one of the hooks and threw it over my shoulder. Had my headlight on and looked back over my shoulder and there just happened to be a bat flying by the boat and he crashed into the blue gill head in mid air!!! LOL!!! I don't think I could do that again on purpose in 100 years if I had to. I have no idea what happened to the bat, I dropped on the front off my boat laughing my *** off. Definately a first and probably a last for me.

Re: Me-1, bats-0

When I was a kid we used to stand out under a lightpole in a gravel parkinglot and toss the pea gravel up in the air and watch the bats chase it towards us and the ground. One night as a group of us were doing this a bat dove and wound up becoming stuck in a girls curly hair for a few seconds as she squeeled and frantically swatted at it until it finally flew away . She probably has a bat phobia still today.............PS I bet a bat would make great cutbait or a lively night time topwater Bassbait hooked through the skin!!

When I was a kid there were bats that flew around in the outfield while I played little league baseball. Don't ever remember being scared of them. Maybe of one flew down and got stuck in my hair though, lol

Many North American bat populations are down due to "white nose syndrome" and I think using a a bat for bait would be a tragedy. Bats eat their weight in bugs that eat you and me. That is a great benefit from a little critter that is at risk for becoming extinct.

As far as animal rights people: I am not one of those. But I *do* strongly believe in sportsman's ethics and I have a number of problems with the idea.

For one, hooking a higher animal through the skin is a fairly cruel thing to do and would inflict a lot of suffering. Ever heard of clean and humane kill? Ever take hunter's safety? Using a bat for bait in terms you might understand would be like using your dog's puppies for bait. Second, causing an animal or even a human enemy suffer just for 'sport' (sic) is disgusting and immoral.

The bat 'saw' the chunk by his sonar and was merely striking it no differently than a salmon chasing down a salmon spoon :)

I'm preaty sure they were just kidding about the whole bat bait thing. And don't worry,...I didn't hit the bat with a blue gill head on purpose. I just never thought in a million years id see a bat crash into a fish head like a missile intercepting a jet aircraft :)

 WOW.
Can someone call ozzy and have him bite the head off another bat for this guy. Hey Mark, let me ask you a question. if your wife or girlfriend doesnt say i love you back when you tell her that, do you go into a speach about why its important to return the i love you's to your loved ones. Sir you need to get a grip. we are so sorry if for what ever reason, that you thought we would actually do something like that and thank you so much for your animal expert dialog on bats but go to your local doctor or wal-mart and get the biggest CHILL PILL you can find. Thanks you and have a great day:D

Fishndirk, I bet the bat thought it was a large beetle or something and tried to eat it, then "bonk"

was out last night just after sundown between rain storms with the girlfriend on the deck. I mentioned the bats flying around eating the insects because you could see about 2 dozen in the dim light against the sky. she freaked. turns out in highschool a mutual friend of ours actually caught a bat and threw it at her and it got stuck in her hair.

Re: Me-1, bats-0

I was absolutly kidding about using a bat for bait guys. I am an outdoorsman and don't even kill snakes unless I have no other choice, like a copperhead I once killed that was threatening my dogs and tryed to get underneath a storage shed where I could not catch and re-locate it. Also Bats give me the heebee jeebee's, I once had them inside an old house we lived in and it was quite an adventure trying to remove them, took 3 days and the wife went to stay at her sisters she was so scared!! (fishnet works very well to catch them). Also bats often carry rabies and our local health dept. wants anyone "exposed" to them to recieve very expensive treatment. I did kill one of the 3 bats in the house trying to remove it from a small channel in the top of a metal framed horizontal window slide and they tested it for rabies, it was negative but they still tried to force me to get treated because i released the other 2 w/o them being tested also!. My wife had contacted a friend in animal control (and then the health dept. got into my business). It's best to leave bats alone and they are creepy little creatures especially when viewed up close and personal :eek::facepalm: I was told bat saliva can infect you by getting in your eyes or mouth not just from bites:eek: so be carefull when messing w them.
