You really need to have the service manual in front of you to do this.

SO that Means you wont tell me what the code means? I have several pages from the service manual that where given to me by a friend it included clearing old codes and then finding the new code - The service manual is $70.00 from Tohatsu if I just need a new coil it would sure be helpful if you told me. Thank you

Whoever quoted you that price is a thief, or worse.

003-21050-2 SERVICE MANUAL MD40B/50B TLDI $40.00

Just having some minimal code info is not enough to service the TLDI motors; they are not designed to be serviced by the "shade tree mechanic" method.

I would highly recommend that you consider contacting and dealer, including several forum members, heck, even me, and get the complete manual. Then study the book, use it as a guide, and troubleshoot thoroughly before just trying to throw parts at the motor.

Dude are you just a Troll trying to sell Manuals or do you help People? Because I found the Answers Elsewhere - Fault Indication Table (Self-diagnosing Mode 3)
5,000 RPM
Indicator "A" OFF (oil press)
"B" ON (water temp) "On indicates severed line or component fault"
"C" ON (battery) "On indicates severed line or component fault history"
Description of problem --- " Faulty CPS: (crank position sensor)

B and C lights are considered "Fault Log" indicators. B means a fault exists
and C has it stored in memory
The actual problem code is the 5,000 indication and the A "ON" for a faulty
CPS.
Looking back through the book, all three lights should have been flashing
while/when it was running.
It does that for a slew of symptoms, including the CPS sensor.

Looking further back in the book, it gives the" CPS gap with encoder ring"
(flywheel) as 0.5 mm - 0.9 mm (0.020 - 0.035 in)
The pickup coil resistance value (L wire to G wire) as 531 ohms +/- 15% at
(20 c 68 f degrees).
The computer thinks the coil (or wiring to it) is open and a meter will
prove it --- luckily.
It doesn't look to hard to change it out unless the flywheel has to come
off ---------------. Good Day Sir

Re: MD50B tldi Need help with a code

Just because I pointed out the the manual is a lot less expensive than you were quoted does not make anyone a troll; it verifies a serious inaccuracy in the information you presented, and possibly some egregious deception by a possibly unscrupulous individual.

Further, as a Certified TLDI technician, I know, first hand, that I would not even consider attempting a repair of a TLDI motor without a proper diagnosis and the Factory service manual as a guide.

All Tohatsu Factory service manuals are copyrighted, so they are not available for free download. I suppose it might be OK to share the diag chart. But then there are the Proper diagnostic techniques, and the Correct service procedures. For example, using an ANALOG (NEVER DIGITAL) ohm meter, with a drive voltage of 3V or less, to take resistance readings... Of course, taking meaningless readings with a high-end digital meter is a common mistake. And then there is the costly mistake of testing the ECU with a 9V (or higher) -driven meter. This sort of information is in the Factory manual, and why it is always recommended by any competent technician.

What are your readings?

If the truth insults or offends you, why do you ask for it? If you already knew it all, why ask us? Since two of us gave you the same answer (mine with some more detail and clarity) -- and, I might point out, for free -- why would you think ill of us?

I hope you have a pleasant day, and figure everything out by yourself, since that's the approach you wish. I certainly will never ever again offer any DIY assistance to the likes of you.

Re: MD50B tldi Need help with a code

The idea here is to help you. Often, giving someone a simple answer does not really help them as it leads them down the wrong diagnostic path. I almost never give out information that can be found in a service manual as you would have to be an idiot to work on an engine without one in front of you. If someone has a service manual and cannot find the information they need in it I would be happy to put them down the correct path...Paul routinely spoon feeds information to the dumb, stupid and blind so calling him a troll was way out of line. He had your best interests at heart because that model engine has 22 pages on just the codes. That's not something that can just be slapped up on the web due to copyright infringement. Also, you need to keep in mind that no one owes you the information or help that you think you need. Having said all of that, I don't think you are an idiot, as you were able to find at least some of the information you were looking for. So, here's a tip that might keep you from making a mistake. You have to use a analog meter to run the tests.
