Recently received this 2006 MD 50 B TLDI from my son as a project motor. It was replaced and put is storage about 5 years ago. The wiring harness was removed from the motor as was the battery connections. I am trying to revive it on budget.
I think but am not sure I have the wiring connected properly but I think so.
When the ignition switch is turned on the horn beeps 1 time, 3 lights come on the tach. When I try to start I get 1 click. thats all. The starter makes no attempt to engage.
Any ideas?

Well, since my first post i have removed the starter, put 12.88 volts on it and all I get is silence. Time to look inside I guess.

No it's not running. Starter does work great though. Fresh 91 no ethanol. Fuel rails have fuel. Installed new plugs. Gapped correctly. Tries to start after several seconds on starter but does not kick off. Found hose leak at fuel rail. Repaired. Replaced 25 amp ecu fuse new. Not sure where to look next. VST?
Thanks for asking. Any ideas?

Your next step is to stop and get a service manual. Then put the engine into self diagnostic mode and read the codes. That will tell you what is wrong if it is mechanical or electrical. Also, make sure you have a 1000 CCA battery. A regular battery will spin the starter, but will not activate the ignition system correctly.

I down loaded a service manual but I don't see the specifics you're describing. Do I need a service manual or repair manual? If possible please tell me exactly what I need. I'll get it.
i have also cleaned and checked the electric pump, low pressure pump, and VST. All had trash but fuel definitely going to rails.
Dont know how or have tools to check the air or fuel pressure.
i have a grp 31 Duracell Agm battery Its almost new.
Dont know if this matters but I have a Mercury binnacle attached to the 2 brown wires in the harness. No throttle or gear shift cables are attached. Throttle set low as it will go. Gear in neutral. Engine spins but does not fire. Excess fuel comes out the throttle body.

Found the page you described. I will put in the self diagnosis mode after I read it a couple of times.

The Factory service manual 003-21050-2 is copyrighted, so typically not available for free download. What manual did you find, and where?

Computer is flashing b and c lights and showing 3000 rpm. Assume this means air injector on numbe 3 cylinder is bad. It does not show anything else. Would this prevent the engine from firing? I am wondering if there could be other gremlins but this is the first one the computer is seeing so it reports that one. .

No. Put the motor in diag mode and read all the results. Then interpret them. Then finish diagnosing. Then repair.

Apologize for taking so much time and length to finish this up.. Because this engine had not been started for more than 5 years and I intend to use it to take me to remote places I did more than you might. The high pressure fuel pump was the main culprit. It was stuck. I freed it up with wd 40 and corrosion guard and intermittent hits on my battery. And changing polarityintermittently. Injectors are now professionally cleaned by Hydro tech, Nixa, Mo. Low pressure fuel pump cleaned, VST cleaned needle valve stuck.
Many hose leaks fixed or replaced as needed.
Engine runs great. Faults cleared.

FYI, a malfunctioning air injector will usually not prevent the engine from firing and run (rather poorly) on 2 cylinders if the air and fuel injectors are good. My experiences with faulty air injectors has been with o-rings disintegrating leaving a sooty residue covering the plastic injector body. This can be further confirmed by a compression check in which the suspect cylinder will read lower psi than the good ones. Also if the engine is idling, soapy water squirted around the injector will foam if there is an air leak.
