I've been fighting this leg for couple hours now. New engine installed...all mounts the same. I tried engine alignment tool however I don't think it's going all the way in.

If the alignment tool won't go in then the outdrive will never go on...

Need to grease the tool to tell you much. You need to see how much of the splines are engaging.

But with that said, have you tried putting pressure on the prop to spin the shaft a little bit? I'm 50/50 on reinstalling. Sometimes it drops right in, other times I fight it for an hour or more! The problem is often that the splines aren't aligned perfectly and a little pressure on the prop will spin the shaft into position just enough.

I have tried spinning it as well...tomorrow is a new day...may just slide in. I've never had this much trouble

I did a bunch of videos on alignment, removal and reinstalling the drive, etc. Look in the stickies, MerCruiser information section.

Problem is the bar doesn't go in far enough to make marks in the grease

Not sure how to find that
Stickies are posts that are permanently at the top of the forum.

Your engine/drive is old, right? Like 45ish + years old

Some of the oem couplers from that era did not have relief holes for excess grease in the coupler. Idea back then was the boat didn't last more than ten years, appropriate maintenance assumed.

Kudos on attempting this revival, lessen the amt of grease applied and be gentle with your extremely geriatric boat
