I just replaced the lower shift cable as part of a bellows and trim switch replacement on my 1981 MC-1 drive, and have messed something up in aligning the upper shift shoe and lower shift shoe...I started the boat and it wont go into forward gear at all, and in reverse it just clanks and clunks, wont engage fully.

When I replaced the lower cable and placed the helm control in the full forward position, the upper shift shoe was not 100% parallel/centered on the drive, looking straight on from the rear. I checked the distance between the brass barrel and the center of the shift cable hole, and it was a little less than 6 inches, so I spun the barrel to get exactly 6 inches. But the upper shift shoe still wasn't straight. Since I had replaced the upper half of the outdrive 1st without the lower due to the weight, I figured I'd just turn the shift shaft on the lower to neutral, and then I placed the helm control in neutral as well. Obv this didnt work!

What should I do if the upper shoe isnt 100% parallel in full FWD? Adjust the brass barrel farther/out of the 6 in spec until it is? I am worried I wont be able to mate it up properly...Thanks!
