MC-1 165's. Drive install gasket question

The manual, written in 1980 or whatever, says to use adhesive to hold in the o-ring and to install the paper gasket dry. Is that still conventional wisdom? The drives and transom assemblies have been rebuilt and freshly painted so they are clean and flat.
