Maybe a dumb ?

I just re installed the 4.3 LX back in my SS OC519811. Have it all aligned and started hooking up all the wiring and cables. The problem is the main harness plug (bracket on shift cable plate) will only go together about half an inch. Should it go all the way in so the rubber boot that gets clamped butts up against the base of the other piece? I can't for the life of me remember from the dismantle 11 months ago!!!

yes, or at least fairly close - the boat side harness plug should go about 2" or so over the engine side

check to make sure it is lined up properly and all the pins are straight

sometimes a wiggle wiggle is needed to get it to seat all the way

Are all the pins on the male end still there? Is one broke off and still inside the female end? I found this issue on my boat during rebuild. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks Guys I checked everything you mentioned, and have now figured out the problem. The female plug on the motor does not have the same size poles as the one going to the helm. The # 4 pole position on the engine plug is (or was a small terminal) with a tan/blue stripe wire coming from the oil switch. The one in the helm plug is a large pole and a large orange wire. Who ever forced the plug in has destroyed the # 4 receptacle. From what I can tell the #4 wire is supposed to got to the warning buzzer, which my helm does not have. Where can I purchase one?

Large Orange wire on #4???.... That harness is for a much older engine (pre -1982)... Sounds like this boat's had a re-power and the lazy SOB who did the install didn't change out the instrument harness.

Thanks Chris, do you have any suggestions, can I put a warning alarm on it or should I worry about it?

Trying to make one harness fit an engine it was not designed for can/will lead to problems. Yes, you can buy an alarm kit as an accessory from Mercury. Here's the parts listing for you to select the parts you need. Check what's already on the engine and order the rest. Also check that you do have a spare wire in the harness to run the alarm system (hence my first sentence)...

Thanks a bunch Chris, The senders are already in the engine and wired up, the missing items will be 7,8,9 in the list. I will have to go through the wiring closely to make sure all the wires are going to ensure they are all going to the right places. It all worked before I restored the boat. Any idea what year my engine is with serial #OC519811.

If you order part #7, parts 8 and 9 come with it.
