I just bought a 97 1900xr with 120 Force outboard. Boat is in good running condition and I am happy with it. But the steering is so hard my wife crashed into a pier last night because she couldnt steer it. I need to get that fixed before, something more serious happens. I found out on maxums web site 1900xr used a 15' RX-4 steering cable. What is RX-4? I cant find anything related to RX-4 steering cable. Everybody is selling Teleflex cable. Does anyone know if 15' Teleflex rack and pinion cable will fit to 1900xr. I am sure the length of the cable will fit. Im just not sure about the hook up to engine or the steering wheel.

Any info will be apreciated.

While I don't know know the answer for your question, your question will be answered better in a different forum. A lot of the mechanics of a boat are generic. Very few people check forums like these, since there are so many manufacturers.

IIRC a whole steering set up, cable, helm, bezel, basically everything but the steering wheel itself, should run you about $130. Don't quote me on the price though. Also, try calling Maxum (Brunswick Marine), they should be able to offer some assistance.

This may not be your steering cable. You need to test to see if the motors main pivot at the mount point has some internal corrosion, etc thus causing binding and steering resistance;)
Disconnect the steering linkage back at the motor so the motor can swivel independently. If the motor swings very freely by hand....then its your cable or up under the dash.
If the motor is still hard to pivot by hand then it's not your cable and you have to spend some time and get the main pivot greased, loosened up, etc back at the mount pivot.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

BP is thinking along the lines I am with this.

I'd even go further and suggest you first simply lube/grease the motor's leg and steering arm fittings.

Our Force 50 hp was horribly difficult to turn. Thought the same as you, sticking, stuck, binding steering cables.

Greased/lubed the motor's leg and steering arm fittings and now can turn the motor using one finger on the wheel.

Try the simplest solution first, then move to the more complicated/expensive solutions if the first one doesn't work.
