1985 Bayliner 17' bowrider w/ 85hp Force O/B. The motor runs perfect, fires right up & so far no issues beside swapping out the impeller- I wanted it changed because I didn't know how long ago, if ever, the original had changed it. Too be honest, it's a piece of mind thing. Anyway, I had some time to kill, no one around to go for a boat ride & I wanted to go. I thought, this would be the perfect time to check top speed on each of the 4 manual trim settings(no power tilt/trim). My top speed- GPS- 32 mph @ 5000 rpm, it varied a little, but basically, that's it. The factory swim platform(if you can call it a swim platform), with the fold in ladder was dragging a little because of the weight of myself on that side of the boat driving but is that all I can expect from this motor? I'm 195lbs. I have asked question's before re: RPM & it is in the range. There is a S.S. prop on it (not sure of pitch), thought it was factory, but have been told no. Every time I see a boat like mine it has a S.S. prop, this is why I thought it was stock. As soon as it's light enough out side I'll check it out & edit this to include that info. The boat is quite fast enough for what I need it for : Fishing, tubing, family rides (wife won't allow more than 5 mph with the baby on board), & that's it. Just wondering if that it, 32 mph @ 5000rpm.

No trim/tilt is a problem. It would increase your speed if it was there.Your WOT at 5000 rpm is 500 lower than it could be.By yourself it should do about 5500-5800 rpm. Loaded it should be about 5300-5500 rpm.
The stainless prop is aftermarket. Most put them on for performance.
The pitch you run is too much.Say a 19p you should run a 17p it will increase your RPM and give better gas economy.J

Maxxie,
I'm running the same motor 1988 85 hp, on a 17' maxum and with just me, full tank of gas I get 32 mph at about 5300 rpm. I' using a 17 pitch alum prop. I could probably squeeze a few more if I redo my bottom paint.

Plus, I've been told that GPS is always acurate speed measurement tool,
but from a lot of the recent posts, 32mp is about right for that motor/boat
combo.

I couldn't even begin to give advice on mechanical issues and the such, but I have spent a lot of time on the same boat (mine's an '87 that my folks bought brand new when I was a teenager). It never had a problem cruising fully loaded at 38 or so (by the old speedometer) and I just had it up well past 40 a couple of weeks ago, before I started having issues as well.

Plus 1 on the trim and tilt.
