My dealer just installed a tachometer for my Honda BF-50 50hp 4 stroke carborated. Motor is on a 16' Carolina Skiff. At full throttle, the RPM's are 6200. Is this too much? I thought outboards max RPM should not exceed 5500. Honda only offers one prop for this motor.

Isn't the operating range on that 5000-6000 rpm?
6200 rpm with a light load?
Should be great with full load and gear. Keep it under 6000running light.

Doesn't your outboard have a rev limiter? If so, it will run "rough" if you try to exceed maximum RPMs. That's a good sign to back off on the throttle. Once you drop down to an RPM within specs it will once again run smoothly.

What is amazing is how once you get used to an outboard you can easily get a "lead foot" and try to get more out of the throttle. The rev limiter is a great mechanical fail safe.

You have an array of props available for that engine. That dash mounted tach is a somewhat unreliable source of information and they tend to read a little high. You do have a rev limiter with this engine that kicks in at 6300 and you will know when that happens. The only way to know for sure what you are really turning is to put this girl on a shop tach and water test it in the real world. As I said, you have MANY prop options.
