I have a 1989 225 Johnson w/ a 17 pitched stainless prop. WOT RPM is about 5800. I have read different opinions what the max should be. Am I pitched too low? Should I run it with a19? I assume that this will reduce WOT RPM to approx 5400.

You are close at "about" 5800. I would shoot for 5800 to 6000 withan average load. The rev limiter is at either 6200 or 6700. Try raising the motor and use the prop you have. In the end you may be able to turn a 19 at 5800-6000 depending on the boat's hull style.

Good luck!

Manufacturer rates 5000-6000 at WOT.

If the MAx at WOT is 5800-6000 what would you say is safe for "cruising" speed, 3800-4300??

My shop manual says 5500 and i would'nt push a motor 13 years old much over that.
