COLUMBUS, Ohio (Jan. 3) - Maurice Clarett would've been a senior at Ohio State this season had he stayed with the Buckeyes, likely a key member of a team that just won its third Fiesta Bowl in four years.

Instead of joining the day-after celebration with teammates Tuesday, Clarett was headed to court to face charges of robbing two people with a gun in an alley behind a bar.

After spending the better part of two days wanted by police, Clarett turned himself in Monday night, right around the time the Buckeyes were finishing up a 34-20 win over Notre Dame in Tempe, Ariz.

His lawyer, Percy Squire, said Clarett would be jailed overnight and planned to plead not guilty at a Tuesday court appearance. Squire wouldn't elaborate.

Clarett was wanted on two counts of aggravated robbery since early Sunday, when police said he flashed a gun and demanded property from a man and a woman behind the Opium Lounge in downtown Columbus.

Police said he fled with two men in a sport utility vehicle after he was identified by the bar owner, who happened to come out into the alley. No one was injured, and only a cell phone was taken from the alleged victims, police said.

The 22-year-old former Buckeye star, who helped the team win the national championship in 2002, turned himself in around 9 p.m. Monday at the county jail, Columbus Detective Art Hughes said.

Around the same time Monday, fourth-ranked Ohio State was finishing a 34-20 win over No. 5 Notre Dame at the Fiesta bowl in Tempe, Ariz.

Myke Clarett, Clarett's father, declined comment when reached at his home Monday night. A recorded message on the voicemail box for his mother, Michelle Clarett, indicated that it was full.

Clarett sat out the 2003 season when he was charged with misdemeanor falsification for filing a police report claiming that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment was stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Ohio State suspended Clarett for misleading investigators, and for receiving special benefits worth thousands of dollars from a family friend.

Clarett also unsuccessfully challenged the NFL's requirement that players wait three years after high school before turning pro in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was chosen by the Denver Broncos in last year's draft, but the team cut him in August.

Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said at a news conference the day before the Fiesta Bowl that he had recently spoken with Clarett about opportunities in the NFL Europe.

"Obviously, my reaction to that is it's sad," Tressel said Sunday, "because, as I said the last few times people have brought up the subject, my hope would be that he would have an opportunity to go over to NFL Europe and make a comeback."

Clarett rushed for 1,237 yards and scored 16 touchdowns as a freshman in 2002, but has found only hard times since helping the Buckeyes win the national title.

In an interview with ESPN The Magazine in November 2004, Clarett said coaches and boosters arranged for him to get passing grades, cars and thousands of dollars while at Ohio State. None of the allegations were verified and Clarett never responded to NCAA requests to be interviewed about them as part of its investigation into Ohio State's athletic program.

Does innocent until proven guilty ring a bell? The media already had tried and hung him from way back. He does seem to be shady in my opinion. Just have to wait and see what happens.

What I want to know is where are all of his supporters from a few years ago. The same people that told us that he was taken advantage of by OSU. That his problems were not of his own making. Where are you Jim Brown? You have not turned your back...have you? You criticized OSU for cutting their losses and moving on after learning and understanding the character of Clarett. I grew up minutes from Cleveland and love the Browns and Jim Brown, but I really dislike the fact Mr. Brown tried to tell the Buckeyes and the NFL what is best for them.

What bad advice this kid recieved a few years ago!

Heard a caller on one of the late night sports talk shows suggest that the Cleveland Browns look at Maurice as a possible candidate for Offensive Coordinator. They need more offensive production and maybe Clarett can institute the "Run and Gun" offense! :D

"Run & Gun"...LOLOL!!!! :D What's he gonna do... hold up the opponents defensive coordinator??

The tale of 2 football players... Maurice and Troy Smith.

Troy got caught, accepted responsibility, paid the price, and has finally re-established some credibility as a person and football player.

Maurice got caught, blamed others, got off.
Got caught again, blamed others, got off.
Now, caught once more. Will he get off? Probably.

The boy had the opportunity of a lifetime and he squandered it. How tragic.

S.S., eyewitness identification is just about the strongest evidence in a court of law....He's guilty.....The world is never enough for some individuals.....JK

KaGee, I agree with your assessment of Troy Smith and Clarret. 2 different worlds! That is the same thing I am trying to teach my kids - if you mess up, fess up! I have one that refuses to admit mistakes - it is always everyone else's fault. He is now 20 and slowly coming around to see that it is usually okay to make a mistake if you are willing to admit it and make things right. Clarret hasn't learned this yet. I pray he does before he is facing a life sentence or messing up others lives so badly there becomes no way out.

If only the university’s would use the scholarships for the original purposes which was to get an individual though the school with an education.

Lets cut out the hypocrisy of calling these students and get College sports back to what they are supposed to be. We have too many so-called athletes that cant even read.

They are brought in and pampered given courses in finger-painting and other make believe courses and can hardly comprehend the English language.

ok my rant is over

Sad story for a true talent. He could be graduating with a degree if he took the free ride. He may not be able to buy a mercedes benz but he would have a future in the real world.

Innocent until proven guilty, I say. Then put his butt in jail for a long time before he kills someone. That is all I have to say about this liberal matter.

It is really a shame that he is wasting all that he was given.

Unfortunately, he seems to be following in the footsteps of the Nebraska tailback, Lawrence Phillips from a few years ago.
