Bought a used NSF3.5A from someone, and replaced the impeller which was shot. Going nuts trying to get driveshaft spline seated, which seems to be stopping about an inch short of where it should be. Even if I get that in place, how do I get shift linkage and water tube also in place at the same time to get it all back together? Any advice to save my sanity much appreciated!

Welcome to Iboats,

If drive shaft splines doesn't want to get inside crankshaft, you must turn flywheel CC by hand and push lower leg upward untill set.. Water tube should align along. Is there a round big black grommet located at middle leg ? If so pull it out will see a joint rod coupling. Both upper shift rod and lower cam rod connects there. Is the inverse procedure to pull lower unit.

I got an extra set of hands to help out about ten minutes after I posted this- he nailed it first time. Then it just took a try or two to get the shift linkage adjusted properly, and it started up fine. Now to adjust throttle, and we'll be good to go.

If you don't get it fully in on first attempt you're done. Turning flywheel CC while raising LU is the way to go if first attempt doesn't work. Assume you have lightly greased shaft's splines before assembling back LU ?
