How do you match the sending unit to the guage? I had to buy a new temp sending unit as my original one was still in my original motor that was stolen. I went to Napa and got one out of their marine cataloge. It reads way high. Thought I was overheating as my guage had always read accurately and consistantly.

I went down and bought one of those extra nifty infared thermometers and it showed I was not oveheating. They are so cool. You can aim them at the coolant in the heat exchanger, aim them at the inlet and outlet coolant pipes, aim it at the little thermostate bypass hose (that tells a real story) aim it at the oil pan etc etc. Much much more than you can do with one of those little pocket thermometers.

I don't know how anyone ever got along without one.

Bom, My guess is there must be an easy way to calibrate them. I know how they work and I can conceive of a way to cluge something on but I think there just has to be a better way. I hope someone else knows!! I would like to know because I am going to have to replace my sender too and I have been wondering about this kind of issue.

Find the manufacturer for the gauge. Go to their cataloge and find out what resistance range the gauge works.

In a perfect world gspig, that would work, can you imagine Napa auto parts response when you'd say " I need a sending unit with xxxx resistance".

They would respond with "what year, make and model"

Just thinkin outloud here Boom, Do you know if its a 6 or 12v guage? Member when the cars used the 6 volt guages with a current/voltage regulator on 12v systems? They did this into the 80's. Maybe your guage is a different voltage than the sender you got. I dont know if it even matters but it something to think about.

PS:
I was just looking through the Sierra catalog and they list senders by guage manufacture, so if you can find out who's guage it is NAPA should be able to get the right one.
