Re: Matched set of Golden Jubilee Evinrudes
on converting to electric start: I've done a couple '57s, using components from '58s in each case (just coincidence). If you have in mind an antique restoration, conversion is going to be tough. I haven't worked on '59s, but if they are like the '57s/'58s, you really need the correct bottom plate under the powerhead for the electrical hookup -- again, for a proper antique restoration. You need flywheels with ring gear(s), starters and brackets, and two wire harnesses with transom boxes and plugs for the motors. The '57 and '58s interchange, but not sure about '59s.
BUT if you can get a couple of flywheels and starters with brackets to fit the '59s, you can make wiring harnesses -- need solenoids and starter buttons or switches. On a conversion that I'm using ('57), I bought an exterior electrical box at Lowe's (5 or 6 inches square) for the transom box where the solenoid is mounted. I have the starter button at the transom box. Anyway, when you get this properly wired with the correct gauge wiring (and holes bored in the front of the lower motor cover/plate for the wires), you can have a very good electric starting system. There is no charging system -- think that wasn't available (i.e., the optional generator) on the '50s 18s.
If they are properly tuned and starting well, you probably don't want to fool around with an electric start conversion. I'm just saying in response to your post that it can be done....
