What are a matched set of perfect running 1959 18hp Evinrude Golden Jubilee outboards worth? They run good, start first or second pull, paint is good, never overheated, under the hood looks as good as they did in the factory and they both have good props and a spare for each.

I hope you're not trying to sell them on here as that is against the rules.

No I'm just trying to find out the value for a set of motors like these, I have better places to sell them, just don't know what they are worth.

Re: Matched set of Golden Jubilee Evinrudes

All I can tell you is my experience with 18's and I've owned 6 or 8 (various year models) over the years. I still have my 59 18 that I bought about 10 years ago. It's my main runner. Anyway, I've bought and sold the others and I usually paid about 75 to 100 if they turned over and looked half decent; usually at car part shows or flea marts. They had to be gone over (carb and ignition); though some ran decently right out of the gate. I usually sold them running decently for about 200 to 250. I don't think the 59 has an 'extra' value because of the Golden Jubilee although the plastic emblem is pretty neat. Also, I don't think having a pair is a major selling point. Most people today are not going to run them in pairs; maybe back in 59. The downside to the 59 and older 18's is that they use the two hose system. I like it but it does have it's drawbacks. Are you selling them with tanks? If not you need to find someone like me who has those tanks; not somebody just wanting a motor for weekend fishing. I live on the east coast and that's my take on the market here. Canada may be different. Anyway, if I had them I'd be asking probably about 250 to 350 without tanks as long as they're as nice as you say. This is all ballpark! They are great motors.

At the price range it probably won't make too much difference in the price/value even if they have fuel pumps. You'll probably have a larger market of potential buyers though. It's just me but; it wouldn't matter whether they had pumps or ran under the pressure system.

The thing is they are a matched set and I was wondering if they were worth more together or if I keep one and sell the other.

Unless you find a guy doing a twin motor setup that wants those exact two motors. Few and far between though.

I was just curious as to what they are worth, maybe I'll build a boat to fit the motors.

be kind of a shame to split them up, but probably tough to sell together, as said above. Why not consider a hull you can set up with twin 18s? Be better if they were electric start, so might convert them if they aren't. And you will need a period Simplex setup for twins....

I'm into building boats, so it gives me an idea of where to start from, I know people who bought the front door of their house and built the house around it, that's what I'm thinking of doing with these engines. I would find the controls once the boat is built. How hard is it to convert to electric start. They usually start first or second pull.

You might want to promote these motors in MUSKOKA.---Lots of folks up there that might want to bring back their youth when fishing with grandpa.------They also have more coins then the folks in your hometown.---Antique boat show in Gravenhurst with it's " field of dreams " comes to mind.

Re: Matched set of Golden Jubilee Evinrudes

on converting to electric start: I've done a couple '57s, using components from '58s in each case (just coincidence). If you have in mind an antique restoration, conversion is going to be tough. I haven't worked on '59s, but if they are like the '57s/'58s, you really need the correct bottom plate under the powerhead for the electrical hookup -- again, for a proper antique restoration. You need flywheels with ring gear(s), starters and brackets, and two wire harnesses with transom boxes and plugs for the motors. The '57 and '58s interchange, but not sure about '59s.

BUT if you can get a couple of flywheels and starters with brackets to fit the '59s, you can make wiring harnesses -- need solenoids and starter buttons or switches. On a conversion that I'm using ('57), I bought an exterior electrical box at Lowe's (5 or 6 inches square) for the transom box where the solenoid is mounted. I have the starter button at the transom box. Anyway, when you get this properly wired with the correct gauge wiring (and holes bored in the front of the lower motor cover/plate for the wires), you can have a very good electric starting system. There is no charging system -- think that wasn't available (i.e., the optional generator) on the '50s 18s.

If they are properly tuned and starting well, you probably don't want to fool around with an electric start conversion. I'm just saying in response to your post that it can be done....

I have a starting box, as far as I know the only differences between the 59 and 58 is the cover and the fuel pump

Re: Matched set of Golden Jubilee Evinrudes

sounds like you could do a basic conversion, then, using '57 or '58 parts as needed. Whether you want to do that is another question -- depends on purpose for conversion, I guess. I like this '57 and wanted an electric start for use.

Any chance you would know the part number for the 1959 evinrude. I just picked up the same motor and want to change the filter before I try and get it started.

Do your motors have consecutive serial numbers? That may give them more value if they do.

The thing is I have one of the motors in my shop and the other is at my great uncle's so I could get you the model and serial numbers off of the one I have in the shop.
