Marking Rod Caps

Is it OK to use an electric or air scriber to phisically mark the rods and caps so as to avoid mixing them up. On last rebuild I tried markers and even touch up paint to mark them but found it washed off fairly easily during cleaning rebuilding operations.

It's best to simply attach the rod cap to the matching rod as they are removed from the engine.

I concur - I leave the rod caps with the mated rod and never have more than one rod cap loose from it's rod at any given time whether disassembling or reassembling... Also, the rod caps are cracked style so they ONLY go back together one way.

Pretty much what I did on my first rebuild. Don't know if it is important but I put the same rod back in the same cylinder on reassembly. Will be helping a friend rebuild a 150 Evinrude from the eighties soon. I guess I will just lay everything out in order like last time and mark again with markers for a second layer of security. Thanks for your input.

You should always put the rod/piston assemblies back in the same cylinder. I either stamp mine with an number on both rod and cap, or use a sharpie. Helps avoid mishaps and you always know what cylinder it came from.

If worse comes to worse and all the preceeding advice was ignored, the rods and caps are like fingerprints...no two exactly alike. So you can match them up according to the fracture lines.
