Mark 55 Install impeller drive pin?

I've positioned the pin on the flat spot with grease but can't hit the pin when driving the impeller down. I've used a piston ring compressor to bend the blades and present it to the "cup" but hitting the pin with the impeller slot is really random. Any better procedures? This is a 1957 Mk 55e series 3.

Use a dab of thick grease to hold pin in place.

Don't need a ring compressor. Take some soapy water to the blade tips after you grease the pin like CW suggested and install the water pump cover while turning the crankshaft CW. The turning motion will keep the pin in the impeller grove and with the slick blades, as you put pressure on the top cover while turning the shaft, the blades will deform and slide right in.

Mark, the pin does not engage the impeller until the impeller has sunk well into the cup. Turning the shaft would hopelessly lose the reference with the pin. The ring compressor is perfect to bend the blades and prevent the impeller from indexing but a few thousandth's off and you miss the pin which you cannot see nor hold. I think just more trial and odds are the impeller will "ring" the pin eventually. Apparently, E'rudes can receive impellers by "turning in" but no, not Carl! I'd hate to have to do this while on a sand bar! Thanks.

Monty - I think Tex was implying that you line up the impeller keyway with the pin and turn it WITH the shaft, as you push down on it. I've used that method myself...

Well, I got it done tonight. We're all having fun here and I'm not disputing anyone's experience but I used the ring compressor to squeeze down to 1 1/2", aligned the pin stuck by grease on the shaft pointing to the keyway at "8 o'clock" in the "cup" then aligned the blade of the impeller next to the half round slot in the impeller bushing and drove it down. It "rung" the pin the first time. Honestly, any movement of the shaft while struggling with the impeller blades would lose your exact alignment. The picture A (if it will load here) shows the keyway, and the glimmer of light on the impeller is the pin peaking through, picture B shows the compressor and "junk spacers" used to drive the impeller down. Actually, I used an old impeller with the blades cut off to push the new impeller. Thanks for the encouragement, all.

Right out of the manual with the exception of the type of lube.
