I have a mark 5 that was passed down by my grandpa I'm trying to get it running and it has clean 16:1 fuel new fuel lines, spark plugs, cleaned fuel filter, and cleaned carb.I have spark but fuel is not getting to spark plugs. The fuel just drips out of the front of the carb where the brass choke plate is. Need help trying to get it running to make my grandpa happy

How do the coils look? Does it have a Phelon or Bendix-Scintilla (bakelite cover) magneto? If there are ANY cracks in the coils, replace them. Both styles are available - be prepared for sticker shock!!

Coils seem to be in good shape I took a light voltage tester and put it on the coil and the tester lights every time I pull to start it

racerone is the 1\4" gap what it needs to be ? I bought brand new spark plugs for it. I haven't measured them. If the motor hasn't ran in 30+ years and fuel was drained prior to storage so it was bone dry. Do I need to prime it somehow ? Sorry for all the questions but this is the very first boat motor I've worked on

No, the plugs do not get gapped at 1/4". The spark must be able to jump that much, though. Minimum! The plugs get gapped at .030".

No priming necessary. Choke should be sufficient. It'll flood easily, so if you're dripping fuel out the carb, you've got too much fuel. What do you have for compression readings?

Lacking a gauge, you can buy, beg or borrow one. They're not expensive and can be handy for many motorized purchases. Some auto parts stores loan/rent them, too.

Okay thank you. What should the compression readings be and if they are too low what should I do next ? Do they still sell parts for this motor ? Thanks again Chinewalker

Compression for the mark 5 should be better than 80 psi in both holes with no more than 10% variance between them.

Yes, some parts are still available. Start with oldmercs.com .
