1958 Mark 30 with tiller, Guy brought the motor in to have the lower unit resealed, I didn't run it before I reworked it. Anyway, Fresh bearings and seals, disassembled and all spacers and shims labeled for location, inspected and assembled with the genuine mercury manual and using dial indicator for measurements. It shifts fine off the motor, detents into neutral perfectly, and snaps right into forward and back to neutral, Reverse shifts fine but stiff, there is no evidence of detent when it goes into reverse. With the gear case installed, and motor running it shifts forward and neutral fine with nice crisp detents, reverse is difficult and will not stay in without holding the shift lever. What am I missing? I am thinking maybe twisted shift shaft in mid housing?
