Mariner year from serial number

I've hunted unsuccessfully to find the year of a used pontoon boat motor I just acquired. It is 40ELO which I translate to 40 HP, Electric, Long Shank, and Oil feed (which is long gone and uses 50:1 mixture instead). It is CODE: 6E9 L, with serial number 425886. I would like to get a repair/maintenance manual but can't figure out the year or even whether it is Mercury or Yamaha. The label does say it was Made in Japan if that is a clue. Anyone able to translate that info for me? Thanks!

Hi there, your serial number comes up as an MARINER SANSHIN 40 ELO - ( 40 H.P. (1987) Serial No: 00425886 Model No: 7040717 Parts Catalog No: 90-16643.
